This is the best known\nof the bivouacs owned by the State Forestry Agency and located in sequence\nalong the 38 km of the Altomontana Path, which can be reached in an\nhour-and-a-half\u2019s walk from Piano Vetore. It is located at 1878 metres and is\nalways open so that it can be used by excursionists, day and night. There is a\nwater tank supply but no toilet facilities. It can only be reached by bicycle\nor on foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Esso \u00e8 un piazzale posto a quota 1525 m s.l.m., in un pianoro particolarmente ameno poich\u00e9 circondato da una mezza corona di crateri laterali ricoperti da folta pineta. Il pianoro, denominato \u201cPiano Fiera\u201d \u00e8 dotato di un\u2019area parcheggio piuttosto ampia e di un\u2019area attrezzata del Parco e fu attraversato da antiche colate laviche, inframmezzate da alti pini che sono riusciti a introdurre le loro radici tra le ruvide rocce. Il sentiero si estende per circa 5130 m e si svolge per buna parte sotto la pineta di Adrano-Biancavilla che per le sue peculiarit\u00e0 costituisce un Sito di Interesse Comunitario (SIC). Il sentiero permette all\u2019escursionista di attraversare una vasta variet\u00e0 di paesaggi che coinvolgono spazi aperti, caratterizzati dall\u2019affiorare di rocce laviche e un\u2019alta concentrazione di coni avventizi antichi caratteristici per la loro forma regolare, tra i quali Monte Forno (1650 m s.l.m.) e Monte Albano (1694 m s.l.m.). Esso consente di raggiungere, dopo meno di un\u2019ora e mezzo di cammino, la Pista Altomontana (701) in prossimit\u00e0 del Rifugio della Galvarina a quota 1878 m s.l.m., ovvero un ospitale bivacco mantenuto sempre aperto ad uso degli escursionisti dall\u2019Azienda Foreste Demaniali. Il percorso si sviluppa all\u2019interno del Demanio Forestale lungo una pista di servizio dell\u2019Azienda Foreste ad una quota media di 1750 m s.l.m. Il sentiero, lungo i versanti occidentale e settentrionale del vulcano, propone all\u2019escursionista un affascinante spaccato della natura e della biodiversit\u00e0 vegetale del Parco dell\u2019Etna, dei suoi boschi, delle lave antiche e recenti del vulcano e dei suoi panorami pi\u00f9 suggestivi. \u00c8 percorribile in tutte le stagioni dell\u2019anno, anche se in inverno, l\u2019eventuale presenza di neve e\/o di nebbia, comporter\u00e0 un aumento del grado di difficolt\u00e0 e, pertanto, la Pista andr\u00e0 affrontata da persone esperte e adeguatamente attrezzate. Il percorso intercetta gran parte dei sentieri della rete sentieristica del parco, quali: 704, 705, 707, 708, 710, 712, 713, 714, 716, 717, 718, 719, 720, 724, 726, 732, 734, 735, 739, 741, 755, 782 e 786B. The only exception is a short pass stretching through a narrow lava path resulting from the 1981 eruption, which spilled onto the north flank threatening the town of Randazzo.\n\nThe ring it outlines is not a closed one, due to the chasm of the Valle del Bove, not impossible though difficult to cross.\n\nThough curved in shape, the length and conformation of the Pista Altomontana make it a sort of backbone of the Etna trail network, as it is accessible from almost all the villages surrounding Etna through some paths featuring a roughly radial track. Subsequently, it is possible to proceed towards the summit areas from some of its junctions, following other paths through large radial lines.\n\nThe Pista Altomontana could be defined as the \"hub\" of the Etna trails, as it allows reaching the medium altitudes of the Volcano from one side and descend from another one.\n\nIt also allows crossing and enjoying almost all the landscapes that Mount Etna can offer, ranging from different types of tall trees forests and- in particular - pine woods with larch pine and beech woods, to harsh lava flows characterised by very diverse shapes and appearance. The Pista Altomontana roughly marks the border between the second and third of the three circular belts into which the ancient authors used to divide Etna, that is, the downstream wooded belt and the upstream volcanic desert belt.\n\nFinally, it allows admiring an hourly changing panorama overlooking the two underlying valleys of the Simeto and Alcantara rivers, the mountainous complexes of Nebrodi and Peloritani and the villages scattered across them. This is half-crowned by lateral craters covered with thick pine forest. The recently renamed \u201cPiano Fiera\" plateau was crossed by ancient, undated, lava flows intermingled with tall pine trees that managed to take root among the rough rocks. The trail is 3,940 m long.
